Well. We have taken delivery (or should I say we went and collected) our chicks today. They are only a day or two old and still very fluffy. Feathers are starting to poke their way through though so we're hurtling towards the "ugly" phase.
We wanted 4 Scots Dumpy, 3 Appellenzer and 5 Croad Langshanks. We think that we only have 3 Scots Dumpy and one extra Croad. But its ok.
The chicks are happy in their new home (former rat cage) outside my eldest daughters bedroom and they are cheeping away. I'm glad my daughter is away at the moment because otherwise the chicks might complain about listening to Radio 1 at full pelt all day long. I doubt she'd hear the chicks .....
The little children think the chicks are lovely and wanted to kiss them all goodnight. Ahh - bless. Just give it a couple of weeks when the chicks are quite ugly and large and ungainly and the children won't want to know. In fact, they might get nightmares!
Annette at Absolute Chickens has been incredibly helpful and is an inspiration to us. She is happy to give advice etc and if we do end up with cockerals (of course we will - we're bound to have ALL cockerals), she's happy to take them back and "deal with them"..... But seeing as most of them are rare breeds, we could easily pass any cockerals on to breeders.
